Gaming and Grazing / Announcing my TT RPG (in development)
« on: October 14, 2014, 09:59:28 pm »
I've been working on a pen and paper RPG system based on the d20 system. Here's a few tidbits.

-Weapons and weapon properties: Weapons will often have intrinsic properties. These properties often give some unique minor bonus, or even a penalty associated with them.

1. Noisy: Using this weapon gives enemy characters an immediate Perception check to notice your presence (with a +10 bonus). This property can be negated by equipping a "Supressor" upgrade. Example weapons with this property: Any form of gun or explosive weapon, chain saw.

2. Finessable: You may use your character's dex bonus for melee attack rolls instead of str. Example weapons with this property: Unarmed, katana, dagger, rapier.

3. Armor Piercing: Ignores 3 points of damage reduction on characters hit by this weapon. Ranged weapon ammunition with this property takes a -2 penalty to damage rolls. Example weapons with this property: Scythe (piercing mode), armor piercing ammunition (guns, bows), bill hook (yes, the signature weapon from Higurashi is being referenced here).

4. Psychopathic: Upon the first round this weapon is used, all enemy characters within 15 feet of the person who used it must make a will save. Those who fail are shaken for 1d3 rounds. Example weapons with this property: Bill hook, chain saw, scourge, meat hook.

--Weapon proficiency is based on groupings. Example weapon groups are swords, guns, bows, cross bows, axes, hammers, spears, unarmed, and maces. More exotic weapons (like katanas and bastard swords) just require the Advanced Weapon (Category X) to be proficient in.

-Damage attributes include the following: Slashing, piercing, bludgeon, fire, ice, water, lighting, earth, wind, holy, unholy, ordered, chaotic, explosive (generally effective against slimes and constructs), corrosive, sonic, and energy. For simplicity, monsters are categorized as strong (half damage), weak (double damage), or immune (take 0 damage). For attacks with multiple attributes, calculate damage due to weaknesses and resistances seperately for each attribute.

-Defense: Defense (to prevent being hit) is based on the sum of 10+ class modifier (which does level up with the character) + appropiate stats (dex or depending on character wis) + shield bonus. Fighting from high ground gives a +2 bonus to attack rolls. Being in cover gives a bonus to defense depending on the grade of cover. Armor (except shields) instead confers damage reduction.

-Degrees of success and failure: This mechanic is designed to make good and bad luck less lethal to characters. Every 5 points above and below the required roll to succeed is a degree of success or failure. Natural 20's confer an automatic success to the attack roll, saving throw, skill check, etc, but you still add total modifiers to determine the degrees of success (rolling a 20 still confers 1 degree of success even if the total modifiers were below the target roll). Critical hits require two or more degrees of sucess on a "threat" roll (after modifiers). A natural one always fails, but modifers are added to determine degrees of failure (a natural one that would have suceeded instead gives 1 degree of failure).

One degree of failure usually has no bad stuff happening other than just not suceeding at the task (no net progress for skill checks). 1 degree of failure on a saving throw confers a lesser effect depending on the technique or spell. 2 degrees of failure has bad stuff happen on skill checks and the normal effect on a failed save.

Wikkity! / The anime thread
« on: October 09, 2014, 01:10:49 am »
Yep, after who knows how long I got bored, I'm back.....somehow.

ITT, we talk about various animes we've watched and recommendations.

Starting with me.

1. When They Cry (Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni). Viewed this one around March 2012. Absolutely loved it. If you're a fan of mystery and psychological horror, this is a must watch. Not to spoil anything, but I found the solution quite entertaining. Apparently Steam is releasing a remake of the original visual novels at the end of this year. Can't wait.

2. Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Watched in July 2012. To think that my first forey into the magical girl genre was the one that takes the genre apart. To put it lightly PMMM = Magical Girls + Watchmen. Gotta say, this is legitimately the first anime to make me cry. Just stay away from Rebellion. It's ending is horrible.

3. Paranoia Agent. Finished this one a few days ago. Total mind screw. Enjoyed the cultural critique that shows up post episode 8.

Gaming and Grazing / It finally happened

Today, some truly wonderful news comes for Saturn fans (and fans of legendary yet impossible to get games) across the world. Guardian Heroes is now availible on X Box Arcade. My reaction.

General Sonic / New voice cast is up. (Will update)
« on: November 04, 2010, 01:39:33 pm »
Sonic: Roger Craig Smith
Tails: Kate Higgins. Sounds fantasttic
Knuckles: Travis Willingham.
Cream: Michelle Ruff. Major improvement. Reminds me of a much younger Tsukasa (Lucky Star).
Shadow: Kirk Thornton. Based on what I heard, he's going for a darkly charasmatic approach with Shadow.
Omochao: Laura Bailey. Major improvement. Imagine a mechanical Raspberyl (Disgaea 3) or Rise (Persona 4) and you have this voice in a nut shell.
Storm: Travis Willingham. Sounds like Recomme.
Rouge: Karen Strassman. Major improvement over previous ones.
Amy: Cindy Robinson. Too much like Minnie Mouse. Okay, but would be better if the pitch was a bit lower.
Wave: Kate Higgins.
Jet: Michael Yurchak (credited as Mike Mycheck)
Big: Kyle Herbert.
Vector: Wally Wingert
Silver: Keith Silverstein
Blaze: Laura Bailey. Although I was expecting Blaze to sound like Konan given her reserved personality, I like this voice. It still manages to get a regal feeling (young royalty) and shows the progression Blaze got later in the Rush series (more open, etc).
Espio: Troy Baker. What it sounds like is unknown.
Charmy: Collen O'Shaugnessey. See Espio.
Omega: Vic Mignonnia.

Gaming and Grazing / Disgaea 4 announced at Tokyo Game Show.
« on: September 17, 2010, 03:05:28 pm »
Here's the trailer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L3zdx7I8oI

Seems we have a sword wielding Vampire protagonist, an axe using chick in a Prinny hat, a fire element fist using werewolf, some kid with a green cloak (primary stats are INT and SPD), and a pink haird girl with white wings as main characters. Axel has been confirmed to be making an appearance.

Two monsters can fuse together to form a really huge monsterous creature. Seems that said monstrous creature can be Mchanged into a MASSIVE weapon. Dual wielding seems possible through unknown means.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/112/1121565p1.html

Seems the fate of the company rides on this game. From this we find that said Vampire is rebelling against a corrupt government with the help of his werewolf buddy in a plot that involves political campaigns. Seems the game isn't the Twilight "take that" that I thought it was, but rather a much deserved roasting of corrupt/ineffective politicians that seem to dominate these days.

Coming out 2/24/2011 in Japan. A later press conference has confirmed that the game is coming state side in summer of 2011.

Edit: Seems that the Gargoyles from the 1st game are returning and that there is some new machine monster, and some new class in black.

Gaming and Grazing / Duke Nukem Forever......No longer forever.
« on: September 05, 2010, 02:49:30 am »
And here's the proof.

http://www.tgdaily.com/games-and-entertainment-brief/51395-holy-crap-duke-nukem-forever-gets-a-release-date-window

I used to joke about this game's release being one of the signs of the Apocalypse.

Tommy Wiseau (Wiseau Studios) is suing the Nostalgia critic for "copyright infringement" over his review of "The Room". Now I'm no expert on copyright law, but aren't reviews considered fair game under the "fair use" clause. Not only is this abusing the law for personal gain, it is a direct violation of the first amendment. As such, I believe that Wiseman is to be punished for his gross misconduct.

The Plan: Massive boycott. Spread word around IRL and through the internet that ANYTHING with either the name "Tommy Wiseau" or "Wiseau Studios" is to be under boycott. This includes any films made by him, any DVDs of said films, any books written by him (or based on his works), any games based off of said works, any television viewings of the film not get any ratings, etc. Duration: Permanent, so he learns a lesson about unjust abuse of the law for personal gain and violations of the Constitution.

Gaming and Grazing / MvC3 CONFIRMED!!!!
« on: April 20, 2010, 09:28:28 pm »
http://www.gamespot.com/events/captivate10/story.html?sid=6259098&tag=topslot;img;1

You read that right. MVC3 has officially been confirmed to be in the works and slated for a Spring 2011 release. Capcom is currently aiming for at least 30 characters, though the actual amount depends on time.

Characters Known: Ryu
Morrigan
Chris Redfield (NEW!!)
Wolverine
Iron Man
Hulk

Possible Characters (from shadows in trailer: Chun-Li
Frank West
Dante??
Captain America
Dead Pool (NEW!!)

I consider this hilarious after the comment I made about MVC 3 (the DVC one) I made when learning that Disney acquired Marvel.

Gaming and Grazing / Mega Man 10
« on: March 01, 2010, 06:47:17 pm »
As we all know, Mega Man 10 came out today. Played for about 40 minutes and I've already taken out 5 robot masters and determined (almost solely though intuition) the weakness chain.

Lots of cool gimmicks in the stages. Though the desert stage is annoying.

Three weaksauce/awkward weapons (including one thats awesome in theory but ruined by bad control), two meh ones, two good weapons, and one awesome weapon..

Gaming and Grazing / Prinny 2
« on: January 17, 2010, 09:49:33 pm »
Prinny is getting a sequel scheduled to be out in Japan in late March. Knowing the NIS translation cycle (also based off Prinny), we can probably expect this game state side some time between late June-late September.

-Game Play: The combo gauge now unlocks special attacks when full. Also a new easy difficulty called baby mode in which the prinny wears a diaper. Prinny Asagi is also playable.

-Bosses: An Alraune, female brawler (disgaea 3 look) with twin cleavers and a winged shark mount, male samurai, sorceress (disgaea 3), and a chick with a tank are confirmed. A screen shot of a large dragon near a check point might either be a boss similar to the one in Prinny or there might also be mid bosses.

-Enemies: Slimes (disgaea 3), thieves (female), and ghosts have been spotted. Orcs seem to now be mounted in tanks or parachutes. Gremlins can carry bombs.

Rules Revisions / Difficulty rule proposistion
« on: January 04, 2010, 05:52:28 pm »
I propose a change to the rules in which the normal difficulty requirement is moved to the general rules. I believe having one unified rule (non series specific) is more efficient than having the same rule repeated multiple times.

Games Affected: Sonic Advance 1-3, Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure.
Pros: More efficient. Can nip future problems regarding difficulty in the bud.
Cons: Momentary confusion if not properly announced.

Wikkity! / L4D 2 First Impressions
« on: November 04, 2009, 11:11:20 pm »
My brother just played the L4D 2 demo (I watched) and here are the 1st impressions.

1. Tanks are not as fast as they used to be.
2. Spitters are hax. There have been cases of 1 spitter wiping a whole team by itself.
3. The new shotgun variant is actually pretty good. Faster reload time.
4. The new assault rifle variant has a large clip and is very accurate but has a long reload time. Good for suppression fire.
5. Melee combat is not only viable, but depending on the weapon, frightenly effective. The machete, axe, and chainsaw kill minor zombies in one hit, allowing for a "Zero" style of play. The bludgeon weapons kill in two. Melee weapons are great for saving pinned team mates (except for the Jockey). Much lower risk of friendly fire.
6. Jockey's (Hunter variant) don't knock down but damage over time while riding your back. Very annoying to take out without friendly fire.
7. Chargers are like a juvenile tank. Basically fight like an angry rhino.
8. Witches now move around. However, if they get lit on fire, they are completly helpless (though it will still provoke a horde if spooked by fire attacks).

Possibly one of the most appalling things I have ever read. A few months old, but still important because people must know about this.

http://clarkhoward.com/liveweb/shownotes/2009/05/20/15796/

If you know anyone that works at Wells Fargo, Bank of America, or Chase, send them this article. The original source is the Wall Street Journal. The worst part of this is that this is done without the employee's consent. Anyone who is appalled by this should stop doing any form of business with these banks.

General Sonic / Kotaku article about Sonic
« on: October 12, 2009, 12:29:58 pm »
http://kotaku.com/5336675/

Seems that Sega doesn't define quality for the younger audience as a metacritic 90 scoring game. Sega's core Sonic target is no longer the original fan base, but rather the under 12 group. Interesting read.

Wikkity! / Disney acquires Marvel

http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS126500+31-Aug-2009+BW20090831

The first thought that came to mind was the potential for Disney vs Capcom, a spiritual successor to Marvel vs Capcom (technically MVC3). This might not be so far fetched as Capcom has made games with the Disney license in the past (very good games might I remind you). Based on that thought, I made a roster assuming 100 characters. Some characters from MVC 2 were cut (Dan, Servbot, Roll, and Bone Claw Wolverine) to make room for better characters (Zero, Harpuia, Dante, and Night Crawler).

Gaming and Grazing / ITT, we remember awesome game villains
« on: April 24, 2009, 03:06:27 am »
Simple enough, talk about villains in video games. Nominate a few (3-10) that you believe should be considered to be in the pantheon of great video game villiains and why. There are a few conditions though.

1. No fanboyish comments. Lets keep the discussion intelligent, such as involving traits that stood out, something about the character design (development as well as art), clever writing, etc.

2. No stuff from licensed games unless said villain is an original character created specifically for the game.

Here's some of my personal favorites.

1. Omega (Mega Man Zero 3): This guy was different from the generic villain with a generic "world domination mwa hahaha" motive. He had no goals, no long term plots. The only thing running through this psychopath's head was murder. He cared not whose blood spilt, merely that it did. At the time of the game's release, he was scary in a symbolic way. With possession of Zero's original body, Omega is exactly what fans believed Dr. Wily intended Zero to be from the beginning. To add to the symbolism, you fight this guy in the very same room where the Zero series began.

2. Eliphas the Inheritor (WH40k Dawn of War Dark Crusade): The thing I like about this guy is his personality. He can best be described as a suave evil knight with a commanding aura of dark charisma. For every insult or taunt directed at him, he had a clever, witty comeback. He virtually never raises his voice and loses his temper even less often. To top it all off, the voice acting for this character was excellent. Considered the most popular Chaos Lord by a VERY wide margin (and none of that is through making fun of him, unlike the others especially Carron) and one of the most popular characters in the entire Dawn of War series.

3. Gig (Soul Nomad and the World Eaters): It takes special talent as a villain to make being an omnicical maniac absolutely hilarious. Everywhere you go, he comes up with some form of smart ass comment, insult, or sociopathic idea. and he's on your side trying to make you do stuff that will cause him to take over the main character's body (he's sealed in a sword). Like example 2, part of this is due to outstanding voice acting. Yuri Lowenthal did an excellent job to the point where the US Gig is widely preferrend to the Japanese version.

4. Kefka (FF6): To summarize this guy, take the Joker at his absolute worst and crank it up to eleven. This guy stands out because he's one of those guys you simply love to hate. What I remember him for is for his atrocities, which got progressively more awful, more horrifying as if he was trying to beat some personal record. All of this with some form of witty comment.

I'm also a major sucker for anti-villains, as they are often some of the most well developed characters around.

General Sonic / Black Knight parody internet cartoon
« on: December 10, 2008, 08:14:39 pm »
RPG, myself and a few other people are coming up with a hilarious idea to spoof the Black Knight. Basically, its an internet cartoon with Sonic characters playing roles in a Monty Python and the Holy Grail esque cartoon. We need someone with Flash skills and some suggestions on who should play what role.

Sonic: King Arthur
Tails: The smart knight
Knuckles: The patsy
Amy: Sir Gallahad
Shadow: Sir Lancelot
Vector: Sir Robin.
Black Bull of Aaaaagggghhh!: Black Bull

We need characters for the French Guy, Black Knight, three headed knight, peasants (minstrals as well), the guy who escorts the knights to the killer rabbit (Tim), the guard at the bridge of death, doomed historian, knights who say ni, etc.

Votes:
French Guy: Silver (1), Egg Man (1)
Black Knight: Espio (2), Omega (1)
Killer Rabbit: Cream (2)
Knights Who Say Ni: Egg Man and robots (1)
Bridge of Death Guy: Tails Doll (1) Silver (1)
Minstrals: Chao (1)
Head Minstral: Charmy (1)
Three Headed Knight: Big (1)
Doomed Historian: Chip (1)
The "Witch": Vanilla (1)
Tim: Blaze (1)
Sir Not Appearing in the Game: Fang (3)
Slutty Nuns: Rouge (1), a whole bunch of em. (Like that part with 100 Jack Sparrows.)

Voice Actors:
Amy and possibly Silver: Donna
Egg Man, Shadow, and Black Knight: Ice Man

Edit again: Added more votes (including more of mine)

Gaming and Grazing / Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero?
« on: November 22, 2008, 01:44:49 pm »
I got the Japanese version of the game yesterday.
-Story: Etna sends a Prinny on a quest to get sweets. In the intro, you see Prinnies being tossed out of Laharl's castle (guess who)? The advertisment for this game is that "it's so hard you get 1000 lives <3".

-Gameplay: Square attacks (weak but SUPER fast). Aerial attacks are Prinny Barrage. X jumps. Jump controls are like Ghouls and Ghosts, only without the major suckage (thanks to a butt pound move, you can stop your jump at any time). Holding O causes the Prinny to spin around. If you release after he starts to glow, he runs really fast. Hold too long or release too early will cause him to get dizzy in an embarassing way. You can even charge while moving, but this move seems like a spin dash without the attack property. Triangle picks up objects and pressing it again tosses them. You can also ride vehicles. Let's just say the Netherworld comes up with some weird vehicles, such as a tank with hands with a turret mounted plasma cannon, a springy thing with a big machine gun, and a jelly fish like thing with a 360 rotating laser gun.

-Bosses: So far I've run into 5 bosses. A unique Gremlin, some big fat green thing, Mage Knight sisters (you fight both of them), a pair of death dragons (male and female each with different tactics), and a Nekomata.

Wikkity! / The War Hammer 40k Topic
« on: October 07, 2008, 07:26:21 pm »
With Dawn of War 2 in development, now is a good time to talk about its source material. Its also a real good time to get into the table top game as its starting to become real awesome. I have pics of some of my stuff.

A picture of my Titan, named Rex. Any guesses as to why? Also features my Bane Blade conversion (the tank is fully plastic). Better shots of that next time.

Rex from the side. Armed with an Inferno Gun (super flame thrower) and a plasma blast gun.

These shots are not in close enough proximity to look at the paint details though. Speaking of which, douglas owes me a pic of those Ork dreadnaughts. The fully plastic Ork Stompa that's being released around spring (first ever official model) is about as tall as Rex to get a good idea of its size.

General Sonic / Shadow the Hedgehog version differences
« on: August 16, 2008, 05:21:00 pm »
Found some interesting things regarding this game (based on a video I found).
1. In the PS2 version, the targeting system does not function if Shadow is moving. This does not occur in the game cube version
2. There is a random but fatal glitch (as in go out of control) in which Shadow will suddenly burst ahead after a melee combo in the PS2 version. This does not occur in the GC version.
3. The PS2 version suffers from nasty frame rate issues.
4. Homing attack is more likely to cause death in PS2 version.

How is this significant? Difference 1 is very important on a competitive level in missions with lots of combat. I'd put the estimmate at a minimum of 15 second advantage for the GC version (due to constantly stopping in order to hit anything. Guess what version most likely got used as the basis of review scores? Might also explain why Nintendo Power (and myself) liked it so much compared to many others.

Face 2
Eyes: 9: 02, 24
Skin: 3: 8, 6
Style: Zasalamel (Ankou)
Skills: Auto Impact A, Will Power, HP Drain C

Notes: Probably the most playable of my characters. Very hard to do for several reasons. 1. Only one or two sprites to work with. 2. Color style (muted with lots of lavender as opposed to lots of bright colors) is very uncharacteristic of NIS characters. Dang editor lacks wings for guys and simple bracelets. Should lighten up the hair a bit.

Laharl (Disgaea)
-Neck: Ryuoko Scarf 9: 02, 18

-Ankle: Shinobi Tabi 9: 1, 1
-Feet: Traveler’s Boots 9: 02, 18 I 4: 8, 7
Physique and muscularity both really low
-Hair: Short Untidy 5: 40, 11
Face 2
Eyes: 9: 02, 18
Style: Siegfried (Faust)

Notes: Physique should be very scrawny. Lack of bracelets is annoying. Shorts and shoes are too long but are otherwise a perfect match. Tatoos represent tatooed wings on his back. If the hair style had an antenae option it would be perfect. Just an art piece character since he's basically unplayable.

Yukimaru (Disgaea 2)

Notes: The lack of layering makes adding that apron thing impossible. Other than that, this is probably my best work.

I have a Zetta (merely looks okay), Oswald (looking for single handed weapon that resembles the Belderiver but am currently using Siegfried's Glam), Sapphire (still has some kinks to work out), and a Link. Will be working on Etna, Flonne, and Harpuia shortly.

To prevent any forum cluttering, let's put every detail we know about the game in this thread (I request a temporary sticky). So far, we know the playable characters are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Rouge, Omega, and Cream. That's right, Cream is one of the characters. How you're actually going to beat things up with her is a mystery I'll never know (unless she's the designated medic). Game play seems to be in the vein of Mario and Luigi.
