Title: Cryptograms
Post by: General Throatstomper on January 31, 2007, 04:56:47 pm
You know what I enjoy? Cryptograms. Especially the kind I'm not able to solve.

You probably know cryptograms by another name-logic puzzles. However, by saying "logic puzzle", you're admitting just how trivial what you're doing is, so the term cryptogram is sometimes used instead (or maybe it means something entirely different; it's a possibility).

Post any cryptograms of note that you've come across or thought of, for solving them is most amusing.

Here are an arbitrary number with which to placate your hunger for cryptograms. As a warning, all have been formulated off the top of my head, so they may not have a correct answer.

1) On a spelling test of 20 questions given to a class of 27, one student scored higher than his grade combined with the grades of the other students. How, and what was the lowest he could have scored?
2) When was the first moon landing? (The answer is not a year)
3) In the picture, why are all the dark blue shirts orange and the yellow shirts purple?
4) Someone likes penguins, demons, dragons, and gnomes, but hates apples, paperclips, and windows. Why?
5) A man walks into a store, asks for some candy, and is arrested as he walks out. Why?
6) How is it possible to break out of jail using dental floss?

And so on. These all have definite answers, I assure you; only one answer will work for a given problem.

4) Someone likes penguins, demons, dragons, and gnomes, but hates apples, paperclips, and windows. Why?

LOL

anyway, if these are supposed to have only one true answer, how can you say you came up with them rapid fire and that they may not have a correct answer?

I don't think I understand what these are

I would define them as "riddles". But then there not really riddles, or are they? O:

rpg you are late to the whole "wtf you idiot that's not a cryptogram" discussion.

Oh I got one.

Two fathers and two sons go on a fishing trip together. But there were only three people.

HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED?!?! D=

I used to know the explanation to that one, Ill post it as soon as I properly remember, IIRC its to do with some of them being related or something

One father is the son of the other father, and the other son is the son of the father's son, who is his father.

Okay some actual solutions!

2) Never! </conspiracy> (which I don't buy into, btw)
3) Because some idiot inverted the colours
4) Because he's Gerbil. (aka. Linux nerd)

The others I'm either unfamiliar with and/or can't work out.

5) Because he was a wanted criminal.

1)This is possible because you can coutn the score on the spellling test as just that, while counting his grades as his overall grade in the class. 1 would be his lowest possible, assuming veryone in the class has zeros so far.

4) that's because he hates double letters. hence editing alligator out >_>

4. because he plays D&D.

lol

I was contemplating posting that but then I thought "Naaah thats too simple lol :("

Wrong! All of you! On some of them.

1) There are negative grades, and assuming the teacher takes off 5 points for every wrong word starting at 0, the lowest possible grade for the student was a 100.
2) When the moon first formed. A moon landing could mean any piece of debris landing on its surface; the exact period of this happening depends on why you think the moon formed.
3) It's a photgraphic negative (colors inverted).
4) They are pro open source (double letters was not the pattern; "Penguin" has two n's and is favored, while "Apple" has two P's and is disliked. Also note that alligator was taken out because what I mistook for an alligator was in fact a dragon).
5) There was a warrant for his arrest; the fact he does anything in a candy store is highly suspect and hints at prior sinister acts, but has nothing to do with the solution.
6) Organise a jailbreak while using the dental floss for hand gestures (or, if you want a solution which doesn't leave you feeling like a complete rube, sneak up on a guard, choke him with it, take his weapons and keys, and stealthily leave the area).

As for these being riddles and not cryptograms, I quote:

And I'm not changing the topic title either.

Thought of write now (really):

1) What is East South of?
2) Three sticks are on a table, and cut in such a way where six sticks of the same size remain. How?
3) If the red curtain is blue and the blue curtain is red, does this mean you can recognise basic patterns?
4) A battery is put in a microwave for an hour on the highest power, but doesn't explode. Why?
5) As the temperature increased, some water froze. How?
6) 6Sg=5??, and 9Nj=3Td are identical based only on operation. What goes in the '??'?

And so on to infinitum.

1) Southwest
4) It's not made by Sony.

5) The temperature was waaay below freezing point and as the temperature went up some water froze because it was still below freezing point.

For that one, the substance isnt water, IIRC, its Nitrogen?

5) There was a warrant for his arrest; the fact he does anything in a candy store is highly suspect and hints at prior sinister acts, but has nothing to do with the solution.

Then why was it part of the question ?

"1) What is East South of?" east is south of northeast, and north of southeast

"2) Three sticks are on a table, and cut in such a way where six sticks of the same size remain. How?" Cut each of the three sticks in half. Then you have six sticks of the same size.

"3) If the red curtain is blue and the blue curtain is red, does this mean you can recognise basic patterns?" what?

"4) A battery is put in a microwave for an hour on the highest power, but doesn't explode. Why?" Battery powered microwave. Or the battery was of the highest power, the microwave wasn't turned on at all. Hell I wouldn't even know what happens to a battery when it's microwaved. The Sony answer is really nice.

"5) As the temperature increased, some water froze. How?" Like Rick said, not all of the water had time to freeze, so it was still goin on even as you raise the temperature.

"6) 6Sg=5??, and 9Nj=3Td are identical based only on operation. What goes in the '??'?" Couldn't I pick any two letters for the answer?

1. northeast.
2. they are cut directly across such as a straw cut on those red lines.
4. its empty?
5. it froze in a difrent place than the rising tempeture?

I'm gonna guess that #6 is Ff.

I may answer the rest if I could bother to think about them... >_>

1) What is East South of?

I can't think of anything better than Northeast.

2) Three sticks are on a table, and cut in such a way where six sticks of the same size remain. How?

Assuming the three original sticks were the same size, cut each in half (the same kind of half in each instance). All six have the same size. If the three original sticks aren't the same size, then... you cut them so the remaining six are.

3) If the red curtain is blue and the blue curtain is red, does this mean you can recognise basic patterns?

No it means you have really inaccurate names for your curtains. ps this question makes no sense.

4) A battery is put in a microwave for an hour on the highest power, but doesn't explode. Why?

It's somewhere in the microwave other than the actual microwaving compartment. i.e. a battery-powered microwave, as someone mentioned.

Or it is in a lead case, which would absorb the microwaves???

5) As the temperature increased, some water froze. How?

Pressure was also increasing.

6) 6Sg=5??, and 9Nj=3Td are identical based only on operation. What goes in the '??'?

My first instinct was elements, but apart from Seaborgium (Sg), those symbols aren't periodic elements.

Could argue that using algebra it could be any letters.

Can't be bothered to work it out using some kind of number-letter cipher.

1) The North Pole?
2) Don't understand the question. Do you mean six sticks identical to eachother or six sticks identical in size to the original three or what?
4) The battery was on highest power and not the microwave? ¯\(°_o)/¯ Or the microwave wasn't plugged in or turned on, just had its power dial pointing at "MAX".
5) The temperature of the water lowered, but, due to conservation of energy, this mean that the temperature of the entire rest of the universe rose.

[EDIT] Oh shit I helped necromancy.

#6: Ff. I base my answer on my list of {1Ob, 2Tc, 3Td, 4Fe, 5Ff, 6Sg, 7Sh, 8Ei, and 9Nj} >_>

#2: You had 9 sticks but only 3 were on the table. You cut those 3 and the 6 remaining are the same size. >__>

#4: The battery's not made by Sony >___>
